Environmental factors such as food, drugs, or exposure to toxins can cause epigenetic changes by altering the way molecules bind to DNA or changing the structure of proteins that DNA wraps around.

Epigenetic marks can be affected by exposure to metals, air pollution, benzene, organic pollutants, and electromagnetic radiation [98]. Chemical and xenobiotic compounds in water or the atmosphere are other potential environmental stressors capable of changing epigenetic status. Individual genetic background and environmental factors are intertwined to lifestyle in determining the health status of individuals Figure 1.

Increasing evidence shows that environmental and lifestyle factors may influence epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation, histone modifications and microRNA expression. Examples of epigenetics Epigenetic changes alter the physical structure of DNA. Another example is histone modification. Researchers found that chronic exposure to a stress hormone causes modifications to DNA in the brains of mice, prompting changes in gene expression.

The new finding provides clues into how chronic stress might affect human behavior. Nutritional Epigenetics: The Future. Nutrients and bioactive food components can therefore reversibly alter the DNA methylation status, histone modifications, and chromatin remodeling, subsequently altering gene expression and having an impact on overall health.

The foods you consume can turn on or off certain genetic markers which play a major — and even life or death — role in your health outcomes. Incorrect epigenetic marks can result in birth defects, childhood diseases, or symptoms of diseases in other interims of life.

Epigenetic mechanisms also regulate development and adaptations during the life of an organism, and their alterations may result in various disorders such as cancer. Environmental exposure to certain chemicals, ultraviolet radiation, or other external factors can also cause DNA to change. These external agents of genetic change are called mutagens. Body and mind are inextricably intertwined, and the thoughts that we think, and the activity of the mind, determine the health and expression of our DNA.

Behaviors are the actions generated from our thoughts and feelings. It is because they possess an enzyme that produces melanin dark pigment in their fur. OK, so the thing about this enzyme is that it is highly temperature sensitive. It only works in cold temperatures. This is the classic example of how an environmental factor can affect the expression of a gene. Thus the phenotype is affected by environment not genotype.
